A Tooth Lost to a Severe Dental Trauma Might Be Replaced with a Dental Bridge

Sports injuries can harm the mouth just like any other part of the body. This is why many schools and athletic associations require the use of protective mouth guards during contact sports and other rigorous athletic activities.

Unfortunately, sometimes even a non-contact sport can cause a blow to the face. The severity of the dental trauma will determine the treatment method Dr. Joy Jen advocates. Sometimes a dental avulsion or knocked out tooth can be restored with a root canal.

Unfortunately, there are some cases where the blow to the face carried enough force to severely traumatize the tooth or the underlying structure of the dental socket. In some of these cases, there might not be enough healthy dental structure remaining to save the tooth and Dr. Joy Jen will need to extract whatever remains of the tooth’s root.

When you are ready, Dr. Joy Jen might recommend replacing the lost tooth with a dental bridge. This restoration process typically takes two appointments to complete.

Dr. Joy Jen will start by examining the two teeth adjacent to the void to make sure they are completely healthy. Then she will use a dental drill to remove the tooth enamel from each tooth. This creates a pair of abutments that will eventually anchor the dental bridge in your mouth.

An impression will be created of the area which will be sent to a professional dental lab. This will serve as a guide for the technicians while they create your dental work.

You will need to return for a second appointment when your dental bridge is ready. Once Dr. Joy Jen cements the dental bridge in place it will fully restore the tooth’s presence in your mouth for many years to come.
